Pianist/Composer Adam Sherkin is a dynamic artist who commands a multi- dimensional approach to performance and composition. Admired for innovative programming and engaging virtuosity, Sherkin has performed at significant venues throughout Canada, the United States and Britain, including the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, the Four Seasons Centre, the Glenn Gould Studio, the Toronto Centre for the Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Sanderson Centre (Brantford), Kleinhans Music Hall (Buffalo), the Bridgewater Hall (Manchester), King’s Lynn Festival, St Martin-in- the-Fields (London), Covent Garden and the Royal Albert Hall. Sherkin released his debut album, As At First, on the Centrediscs label. Acclaim has followed, with critics describing the record as possessing “energy and panache, craftsmanship and a sense of daring. Sherkin’s music is unmistakably that of a young, living, breathing and very gifted composer.” A second solo disc, Open Myths, will be released in the Fall of 2018.
Recent performance highlights for Sherkin include a residency at the CBC’s Glenn Gould Studio, Art Gallery of Ontario (with a commission from Tapestry Opera), the launch of the WRITE OFF THE KEYBOARD Series for three season in partnership with Steinway & Sons, a southwestern Ontario concert tour and the world premiere of his own piano concerto, Whirlwave, at the Four Seasons Centre and the Royal Conservatory in Toronto.
Equally active as a composer, Sherkin has enjoyed recent premieres of his works: Elegiac Variants (2017) for saxophone and piano, Two Songs After Turner, (2015) for voice and piano, Postludes from Adlivun (2015), Tagish Fires (2014) and Northern Frames (2013) for solo piano, Whirlwave (2012) for piano and ensemble and Dances of the Changing Woman (2012) for piccolo and piano. The National Youth Orchestra of Canada performed and recorded Sherkin’s Terra Incognita (2005) for orchestra, on-tour, in 2012. Sherkin’s music has been performed throughout Canada, the U.S., Britain, The Netherlands and Vietnam.
With elegant pianistic command, Adam Sherkin is a young artist to watch. He blends the expression and intensity of the modern with the prophetic power of
our musical past. Sherkin presents the WRITE OFF THE KEYBOARD Series at the CBC’s Glenn Gould Studio in partnership with Steinway & Sons this 2017-18
concert season, January through June. He continues to perform contemporary Canadian music – including his own – at home and abroad.
