Ukrainian-Canadian soprano Natalya Gennadi is establishing her operatic career in North America in a wide range of repertoire. Natalya caused a sensation when she stepped in at short notice in her debut in the leading role of Oksana G, Tapestry Opera’s harrowing tale about human trafficking. Her critically acclaimed performance of this world premiere was described as “stunning… piercing in its openness and vulnerability” (Toronto NOW Magazine), and a “pleasure to listen to” (The Globe and Mail). Natalya begins the 2017 season with another role debut as Mimi in La Bohème with Southern Ontario Lyric Opera. Further roles for Natalya include Countess Almaviva in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro with Brott Festival, Tatiana in Eugene Onegin and the title role of Suor Angelicawith Opera Oshawa. Ms. Gennadi recently made her VoiceBox: Opera in Concert as Yaroslavna in Borodin’s Prince Igor. Natalya’s operatic roles include Santuzza (cover) in Cavalleria Rusticana with Maryland Lyric Opera; Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte with Toronto Summer Opera Workshop, Clotilde in Norma with Oshawa Opera, as well as Zemfira in Rachmaninoff’s Aleko with Toronto’s Opera Five and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with Opera Nuova.
Ms. Gennadi began her vocal studies at the University of Ottawa and appeared in the title role in The Merry Widow with the Ottawa Savoy Theatre Society. Natalya holds a Master’s Degree in Operatic Performance from the University of Toronto where performances included Amelia in Amelia al ballo, and Hélène in La belle Hélène. Ms. Gennadi recently received the Karina Gauvin Scholarship to attend IRCPA’s “Sondra Radvanovsky’s Encounter”, winning a three-day Career Blueprints session at the National Opera America Center in New York and performed in Toronto’s Ukrainian Art Song Summer Institute. Natalya earned a Specialist Diploma in Russian Linguistics and Literature, and shares her love of Slavic music as a professional Russian diction coach with singers throughout North America, including the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio.
